“I left for about 70 days as a displaced person in Deir al-Balah. I decided to return after the Jews returned of course. I came back and found this huge destruction. The house not is suitable for living. I decided not to return to Deir al-Balah because the Jews are not present here.”

STORYLINE:
More Palestinians returned to their heavily damaged homes in the central city of Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip on Thursday.
Their return became possible after Israeli troops withdrew from the city, the second largest in the territory, on Sunday.
But the residents found their home city unrecognizable, with thousands of buildings destroyed or damaged.
Some buildings still stood, but were gutted shells, scorched and full of holes, with partially shattered upper floors.
Among those who returned was Ishraf Qudeeh, who spent the day clearing the rubble in what was left of her apartment.
Despite the devastating destruction, she said it was better to be home than staying in a tent in a camp for the displaced.
Israel sent troops into Khan Younis in December, part of its blistering ground offensive against Palestinian militants.
It claims the city was a major Hamas stronghold and that its operations there killed thousands of militants.
