In the U.S., surgeons in New York announced on Thursday that they had completed the first successful transplant of an entire eyeball.
46-year-old Aaron James from Arkansas suffered a work accident in June 2021 involving a high-voltage power line that destroyed most of his face and left eye.
He also lost his left arm in the incident.
Despite James having no sight in the eye following the operation in May, surgeons at NYU Langone Health said the eye looks remarkably healthy and may yet be capable of transmitting neurological signals to the brain.
Team leader Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, called the transplant "a major step forward."
