Most Gypsy jazz fans just look to Europe for the great players, but you've simply got to hear American Gypsy guitarist Danny Fender play! I borrowed this video from singer Johnny Ugly (hope you don't mind, Johnny!) to share it with more Gypsy jazz enthusiasts. Danny's influenced by guitarists like The Ventures, Buddy Merrill of The Lawrence Welk Show fame, Chet Atkins, and American Gypsy guitar heroes John Adamono and Johnny Guitar---both of whom in turn were huge Django fans. Johnny Ugly is the announcer here (and a fine singer in his own right). Danny's accompanied by George Fat Jones, himself an excellent lead and rhythm guitarman. Danny might not be playing Gypsy jazz here, but his recent album kicks off with a hot version of Django's "Minor Swing" and his repertoire runs a wider range than just Django's songbook.
