North Korea held rallies across the country to mobilise hatred against the United States and South Korea in a renewed hardening of its propaganda effort.
Participants in the rallies, which marked the 73rd anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War, carried banners bearing images of nuclear missiles bound for the US. Slogans included “Pulverise the American empire into dust!” and “Let’s mercilessly beat the shabby and dirty puppet traitor group to death!”, a reference to the South Korean government.
A report on Sunday’s rallies in the state-run Korean Central News Agency said: “The participants marched, shouting slogans of annihilating the US imperialists and the group of traitors who are resorting to reckless war moves against the strong DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea].”
Referring to North Korea’s growing nuclear and ballistic missile arsenal, the report added: “The Korean people have firmly grasped the strongest absolute weapon to punish the US imperialists and the war deterrence for self-defence which no enemy dare provoke.”
Lurid threats against the US and South Korea have been a familiar part of North Korean propaganda since the Korean War, though they have been muted for a few years. In 2018, as Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump embarked on a series of meetings, propaganda images demonising American soldiers and depicting their killing and humiliation were removed from public display.
