Solomon Ouna, an engineer and project adviser for the Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), has been a witness to the creation of Kenya's first modern railway. The SGR would not have been possible without Ouna, who has described the new railway as a “miracle,” because the SGR was only an idea some six years ago, and now it is a reality. Ouna, 70, came out of retirement work on the project in 2006. After two years of research, he delivered an official proposal to the Kenya Railway Corporation to build the SGR. Then after a four-year negotiation with Chinese bidders for the project, Ouna and the Kenya Railway Corporation decided to adopt Chinese standards for the SGR and finally signed a contract with the China Road and Bridge Corporation in 2012.
