"If you block the buses people are going to get off the buses and they are going to march on Princes Street and cause disruption. I think the disruption has mainly been caused by the way it has been handled rather than the protestors intending to do it."

"In this area, the tactics we have seen have been road and rail blockades. We have dealt with the bulk of those. We have reopened a number of roads. The M9 remains close but we are working on that to get it back open. There are other types of activity going on, sporadic incidents and we are dealing with those as they occur."

"They have three days to rectify this (the situation in Africa). We have a plan, it has been costed and analysed. There is only one plan, it is a broad coalition from the Christian, evangelical right through all the religions, through the business leaders, over to the liberal left. Right across the world there is hardly a person who disagrees with what we set out to do. We now leave it up to those eight men (the G8 leaders) to do it."

STORYLINE:
About 300 protesters blocked traffic on Edinburgh's main shopping street on Wednesday when they were not allowed to travel to a march planned near the venue of the G8 summit meeting.
The protestors took to the streets after being turned back from Auchterarder, a village of 4,000 people four kilometres (2.5 miles) northeast of the Gleneagles resort where leaders will meet.
The decision to call off the march outraged the protesters, and Scottish police eventually reversed their decision, and allowed the march to go ahead.
Police had initially called off the protest because demonstrators smashed car windows, threw rocks and attempted to blockade one of the main approach roads to the exclusive Gleneagles resort hosting the summit.
G8 Alternatives, one of the organisers, said the police had behaved disgracefully in denying thousands of people the right to stage a peaceful protest, and insisted they had not been consulted.
Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof, meanwhile, took part in a flame lighting ceremony near Edinburgh on Wednesday.
The flame is said to symbolise hope for Africa. The ceremony was organised by the charity Christian Aid.
Geldof on Wednesday said the leaders had three days to rectify the situation in Africa.
