Kapela ze Wsi Warszawa was founded in 1997 by six Polish musicians who in search of inspiration traveled the Polish countryside making field recordings of folk festivities and village celebrations, studying old manuscripts, and learning from elderly rural musicians. This folk source material is used later by the musicians in their pieces but is also complemented by modern instruments and electronic elements. The artists don't hesitate to introduce various contemporary music styles ranging from rock, blues, soul, jazz, reggae, to electronic music. It's the deep esteem for tradition, however, that is most typical of the band's output. They perform their compositions with foot-stomping gusto on traditional instruments like violin, cello, suka (a 16th-century knee-fiddle), dulcimer, hurdy-gurdy, and baraban drum. While using the haunting 'white voice' singing style of Tatra mountain shepherds, their lyrics are often quite topical, and their music has made them one of the hottest groups around.
