I spoke to two trailblazers from the world of ethical porn—adult filmmaker Erika Lust , and porn performer Kali Sudhra (both based in Barcelona) about how ethical porn seeks to tackle the problems posed by mainstream porn—from how performers are treated, to how sexuality is represented, to how the clips are categorised and shared.
India is one of the world’s largest consumers of internet porn, and as more of us become conscious of the larger impacts of what we consume, it’s no surprise that Indians comprise a significant portion of the viewers of the films produced by Lust.
Which is why Erika and Kali have recently co directed a South Asian themed story called The Saree Shop— in response to the overwhelming number of requests they receive for more South Asian representation in porn. You can check out the trailer and more in the Lust Zine and on the xconfessions site!
Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:
-Pay for your porn, and understand how the porn you consume is produced— who is making it? Is there adequate emphasis on consent? Are the performers’ rights at the forefront? Are performers adequately compensated?
-Seek out perspectives beyond the dominant cis het male gaze—we deserve equal emphasis also on the pleasure of women and queer folk.
-Think critically about diversity and representation - are people simply being fetishised and tokenised or are their identities actually being respectfully represented and celebrated?
-Respect sex workers. Do not conflate consensual sex work with human trafficking. They are not the same thing.
-Think of the ways in which colonialism has impacted our attitudes to sex: and let’s decolonize our sexuality!
