BREAKING NEWS $400/$300 Unemployment Extension SSDI SSI Stimulus Update PUA FPUC Unemployment Benefits
Here’s your unemployment update for Saturday, February 27th, 2021
A bill introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives could provide relief to Minnesotans facing surprise tax bills by forgiving state taxes on the extra unemployment benefits.
Rep. Zack Stephenson introduced the bill to allow Minnesotans to subtract the supplemental unemployment payments from their income in taxes after hearing from people.
He stated, “There’s been a lot of focus and discussion by my Republican colleagues on these PPP loan issues, and how that is creating unexpected tax bills, but candidly I’m just more concerned about working families seeing huge tax bills.”
Stephenson acknowledged his bill would be unlikely to pass before May after most Minnesotans have done their taxes.
However, if the bill gets passed that means taxpayers may have to file an amendment to get their money back.
Meanwhile, the Lousiana unemployment agency faces a lawsuit claiming “unlawful” unpaid benefits and errors.
Months-long benefit delays errors are being cited by a group of residents suing the state agency responsible for administering unemployment benefits.
The lawsuit claims, “The Commission’s arbitrary and unlawful withholding of benefits has created financial uncertainty and distress for the very people whom the CARES Act was meant to assist.”
Unemployed workers described an inability to appeal cases online, website crashes, staying on hold over the phone for hours then being disconnected without talking to a representative.
This is not the first time residents have filed a lawsuit against their state unemployment and hope that this will hopefully solve the unemployment system.
And finally, the $1.9 trillion relief bill passed early Saturday by the House of Representatives would extend unemployment benefits by more than five months and offer an extra $400 a week.
The Senate will now consider the legislation with the plan to send the measure to President Joe Biden by March 14th.
The bill would increase the duration of benefits offered through temporary relief programs which would end August 29th instead of March 14th.
The bill would offer PUA recipients 74 weeks of benefits, up from 50, and PEUC recipients would get up to 48 weeks instead of 24.
Benefit recipients would also get an extra $100 for certain self-employed workers bringing the total to $400 through August 29th.
