Responding to a Russian protest, the U-S State Department on Thursday defended its meeting with a Chechen separatist leader on Monday.
The Russian foreign ministry had said that contacts between U-S officials and Chechen terrorists and separatists was "absolutely unacceptable."
The State Department has publicly and strenuously criticised Russia's military campaign in Chechnya for its impact on civilians.
The U-S has also called on Russia to investigate reports of alleged human rights abuses by its troops.

"We are deeply concerned about the human rights and humanitarian situation in Chechnya. We did have a meeting by our human rights and humanitarian officials here in the department earlier this week and we received some information about developments there which only reinforced our concern".

"In our view Russia has a clear obligation to investigate the numerous credible reports of civilian killings and alleged misconduct by its soldiers promptly. This prompt action would demonstrate Russia's intent to adhere to international commitments and obligations especially regarding the treatment of non-combatants."
