ISIL, also ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) or sometimes Daesh, rose to global prominence in 2014 when it swept to power, brushing aside the US-trained Iraqi Army to take over large swathes of territory in the North and West of the country, declaring its capital in Mosul from whence they announced the Islamic Caliphate. Muslims from across the world, drawn in by their violent method, traveled to Iraq and Syria, as well as committing acts of terror in their home countries from Russia to Turkey to Belgium. While the group saw stunning success in 2014, by 2016 the United States and many of its allies, Russia, most Middle Eastern states and several African states declared war on the ISIL whose territorial gains steadily reduced in size. In 2017 the cities of Raqqa and Mosul fell to the Caliphate's enemies, though it would take two more years for the last outposts of the terror group's territory in the Syrian Desert to fall.
