Last year, I made Alton Brown’s Aged Eggnog recipe in October to taste in December during the Holiday season. It actually turned out really well (video linked above). Alton Brown says in the recipe description, “store in the fridge for a minimum of 2 weeks. A month would be better, and 2 better still. In fact, there’s nothing that says you couldn’t age it a year, but I’ve just never been able to wait that long.” In my Aged Eggnog video last year, I took that statement as a challenge and have left a quart of the Aged Eggnog in my fridge for an entire year.
However, I didn’t want to just taste it at one year and leave it at that; I am a man of comparisons and A/B testing in beverages, marketing, and beyond. I decided I’d make the recipe again, but using higher-quality spirits from each distillery as the alcohol in the recipe. Last year, I used Hennessy VS (Very Special) as the Cognac, Buffalo Trace as the Bourbon Whiskey, and Mount Gay Eclipse as the Rum in the Aged Eggnog recipe (the recipe technically calls for Jamaican rum rather than Barbados rum, but I already had Mount Gay Eclipse in my bar). In an effort to remain consistent I still stuck to those distilleries, but selected a higher quality spirit from each one of them. This year’s recipe uses Hennessy VSOP (or Very Superior Old Pale) instead of Hennessy VS, Stagg Jr. as the Bourbon Whiskey (it is produced by Buffalo Trace distillery and uses the same mash bill, Mash #1, as the regular Buffalo Trace, I also compared it to the Mash #1 White Dog), and Mount Gay XO instead of the Mount Gay Eclipse for the rum in the Aged Eggnog recipe (shout out to the new and first woman master blender at Mount Gay, Trudiann Branker!).
I also used milk and eggs from a local dairy farm this time, who delivers to my house every week - shout out to Longmont Dairy Farms and January Coffee from Boulder, CO for the connection!

J. Kenji López-Alt seemed to indicate that the age made the alcohol come to the front of the flavor palate rather than subsiding and becoming more subtle with age. If you want to check out the Serious Eats article that J. Kenji López-Alt wrote, check out the link below.

Either way, I think we can all agree that the one thing that doesn’t pair with Eggnog (aged or otherwise) is the movie The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior, specifically on Blu Ray. For those of you that find that reference confusing, please check out this OG YouTube comedy sketch from BalloonShop titled “Egg Nog”, starring Olan Rogers, J Pursley and Thomas Gore:

Have you tried making Alton Brown’s Aged Eggnog recipe? How long did it last in your fridge before you drank it all (or - gasp - did it go bad somehow)?
