In 1982, amid the Argentinian occupation of Falkland islands, a British naval task force comprising aircraft carriers, frigates, destroyers and submarines, was sent to defend the islands. Among the fleet was HMS Coventry, a type 42 class guided missile destroyer. On May 25th, HMS Coventry and HMS Broadsword were dispatched to waters off the Pebble island, to act as decoys and keep the enemy jets away from the fleet. Coventry shot down 2 Argentinian A-4 skyhawks, but then came the misfortune! A second wave comprising four Skyhawks was on the way, and they were flying so low that Converty's radar failed to detect them. She launched an unguided missile to distract them, and began firing her small arms to force the A-4s to gain altitude, where they could be tracked and fired on! But all attempts failed, and Coventry was struck by three 1000 pound bombs on the port side! The bombs penetrated deep into the hull, and explosion caused a furious fire! 19 crew members lost their lives, and another 30 were injured! The ship started filling with massive amount of water, and sank completely on the morning of next day.
