While over half of all Icelanders firmly support whale hunting others believe commercial whaling should be entirely abolished.
Sustainable whaling has a long history in Iceland; however there are still a number of vocal dissenters who view the nation's return to whaling as backward and irresponsible. For the past two decades, pressure from anti-whaling nations like Australia has kept whalers tied up and out of commission. Throughout that time Iceland has been putting its case for sustainable whaling, based on the large increases in local whale stocks.
