The Atlantic Coastal Plain of the United States stretches along the Atlantic coastline from New York to Florida. It consists of sandy beaches, marshlands, barrier islands and the continental shelf. It is the flattest terrain of the United States, and this is where a multitude of Carolina Bays are found. The eastern coastline of the United States was adjacent to Mauritania in Africa 200 million years ago.
