Oddly satisfying experiment using magnets, ferrofluid, food dye, oat milk in a plastic container positioned on a bass speaker that is connected to an online tone generator. (Sine wave 10-200 Hz)
Last time I did this, I tried to make the ferrofluid drop stay more or less in the middle with magnet positioned below the container. It was problematic as many times the magnet over powered the surface tension. This time I wanted to see how the ferrofluid behaves when the magnet is positioned above the ferrofluid. Originally the idea to this came from a lava lamp - Instead of heat, vibrations are moving the ferrofluid in psychedelic patterns and once the speaker is turned off, I thought the ferrofluid would collect in to the middle once again. It does, but in an open container the oily structure and the nano magnetite particles become separate and even when the magnet collects most of the black stuff back to the middle the liquid is left messy looking from the oils. Even if the experiment wasn't a total success, I find these patterns fascinating.
