I'm not a jazz drummer, at all! But 'The Art of Bop Drumming' is a brilliant book. I'm working through the comping exercises to develop my reading, coordination, and dynamics (particularly on the bass drum).

John Riley suggests a starting tempo of 80bpm, which is perfect in my opinion! I'm playing at 160bpm here to show my practice environment - I can JUST about get through the first page without mistakes at this tempo, and it feels good to play, which is part of John's method of practising. I'm also following his 'pacing' method, whereby each 2-bar phrase is played twice, then you play 4 bars of time. When I make mistakes towards the end, I play some 'time' to get me back into it, but it can take a few tries!
