STORYLINE:
Tensions flared on Saturday over plans to create an Islamic centre near the site of New York's World Trade Centre as duelling demonstrations began shortly after a sombre ceremony to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York and the Pentagon.
Around a thousand activists rallied about five blocks from the site of the 2001 attacks to support the proposed Islamic community centre.
Several hundred rival protesters rallied nearby, chanting "no mosque here."
Family members gathering at observances in New York and Pennsylvania brought flowers, pictures of loved ones and American flags, but no signs of opposition or support for the mosque.
Later, a diverse crowd of pro-mosque activists lined two blocks next to City Hall chanting "Hey hey, ho ho - Islamophobes got to go", before marching to an area near ground zero.
Eric Struch came out to oppose what he sees as racism.
The event was largely peaceful, except for occasional exchanges.
Denise Lee took a bus all the way from Virginia to be at the rally.
