Come August and it is time for the two, back-to-back Bonderam festivals on the picturesque Divar island near Old Goa. We attended the St Mathias village Bonderam festival on August 17 and were impressed by the simplicity, zest and hospitality of the local villagers. The Piedade village Bonderam takes place on Aug 24.
Bonderam literally means flags. The erstwhile Portuguese rulers devised a simple rule to resolve land disputes. Respective plots were demarcated by distinct flags ( red, green, blue etc). Over the years, villagers began celebrating the bountiful monsoon harvest by conducting flag marches across their village to the accompaniment of music and dance.
