Coronavirus is the biggest crisis of most people’s lifetimes. It respects no borders, which is why world leadership is needed now more than ever – but that leadership was floundering even before the virus struck. The G7 was best placed to provide it but seems to be in terminal decline. Chaotic preparations for this year’s meeting only highlight the lack of international cooperation. The bar is at an all-time low. Even a signal of collaborative intent would count as progress but the truth is the world needs much, much more from its leaders. What should great leadership look like in this global emergency? Where’s the plan? And does the G7 still have a role to play, or is it history?
