The storm, pictured from an airplane window by a passenger, is part of a frigid wave of arctic air pushing south into the United States, coating parts of the Midwest with more than a foot of snow. It was also captured in satellite imagery (top right). The unusual formation, known as a 'haboob', shows the point at which cold air being thrust south by a huge storm sitting over the Bering Sea meets the relatively balmy southern air, dropping temperatures from the 70s to high teens in a matter of hours.
