The American Missile MIM-104 Patriot Showed Its Muscles In Ukraine.
February 24, 2023, marks the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Escalations between the two countries go back more than a decade but Russia’s initiation of war has pulled Nato countries and eastern Europe and Asian countries on the brink of world war conflict. The Russo-Ukrainian war seems to be favoring Russia given that it is a superpower and has big funding for its military. However, Ukraine is not in this fight alone. The US, along with other NATO countries, has been supporting Ukraine both in terms of finances and military equipment. And just recently, it was revealed that Ukraine is set to receive yet another gift from the States. Along with another $1.85 billion in military aid, Ukraine will also be receiving the Patriot Missile – America’s deadliest missile.
The Patriot Missile
The Patriot stands for “Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target” and is one of a kind that is a surface-to-air guided missile system created by Raytheon Technologies Corp. The missile is considered to be one of the most advanced air defense systems of the US military itself.
According to Raytheon, it has built more than 240 Patriot systems, and these systems are currently being used by 18 countries all over the globe including the US, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to name a few. The system has particularly been in high demand in the Middle East because of the threat posed by Iran. Furthermore, the company also stated that the Patriot has intercepted more than 150 ballistic missiles during combat since 2015. The Patriot system is noted to be one of the most widely operated, reliable, and proven air missile defense systems out there. The theater-wide surface-to-air missile defense system has the capability of defending Ukraine against Iranian-supplied ballistic missiles being used by Russia.
