Why are Republicans limiting voting rights across the country? In Biden’s first 100 days alone, statehouse Republicans introduced more than 360 bills that place new restrictions on the right to vote. Georgia and Florida were among the first to pass these so-called “election integrity” bills. Even before Donald Trump’s presidency, Republicans have been enacting laws that suppress voters for decades, and these restrictions disproportionately impact communities of color. Their newest round of laws goes even further than the voter ID laws of the past, and they’ve been written by a network of think tanks and dark money groups.
We spoke to Mother Jones reporter Ari Berman and New Georgia Project CEO Nsé Ufot about these laws and what the path forward is for protecting voters.
