SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Since the pandemic and then the big increase in grocery store egg prices, more Utahns have taken an interest in raising chickens in their own backyards, according to interim state veterinarian Dr. Amanda Price.

Although the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food does not track the number of backyard chickeners, social media posts and videos indicate it's a popular trend.

Darby Doyle, a backyard chickener of 12 years, said social media images don't paint a complete picture of the responsibility and costs associated with raising chickens in your own backyard.
