Kalamata (Greek: Καλαμάτα) is the second most populous city of the Peloponnese peninsula, after Patras, in southern Greece and the largest city of the homonymous administrative region. In 2011, it had 54,100 inhabitants. As the capital and chief port of the Messenia regional unit, it lies along the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf.
Kalamata is renowned as the land of the Kalamatianos dance, Kalamata olives and Kalamata olive oil.
A city mentioned already in Homer's times. It was the first Greek city liberated in the great national uprising on March 23, 1821. On September 9, 1944, i.e. 5 days after the Germans left it, the site of the battle between the Greek Nazi Security Battalions and the ELAS partisans. Currently a city with a modern appearance, thanks to reconstruction after two consecutive devastating earthquakes in September 1986.
