Welcome to episode fourteen of Rambles through History. This episode entitled 'The Duke's Cut - A History of the Bridgewater Canal' tells the story of Francis Egerton the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater and his vision to build the first canal in Britain that did not use an already existing natural waterway. In 1756 the Duke submitted a bill to be allowed to build a network of new canals to carry coals from his coal mine at Worsley and distribute it via barges upon his new canal network into Manchester and beyond. The bill received Royal approval and by 1761 the first stretch of canal was completed and opened. Over subsequent years his canal system was extended as far as Liverpool and heralding the start of the golden ages of canals.
