'The Tennessee Waltz' is the State Song of the U.S. State of Tennessee and came about in the simplest of ways.
Country music stars Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart heard The Kentucky Waltz on the radio and began wondering why no one had written a waltz for Tennessee, their home state.
So, they set about writing one on matchbook covers as they drove home from Texas.
Pee Wee King said they then matched the lyrics with an old tune he had written years before.
He and Stewart introduced the song on radio, a few artists recorded it and then it became a smash hit in 1950 when Patti Page recorded it.
It was adopted as the State Song of Tennessee in 1965.
This orchestral recording of 'The Tennessee Waltz' comes from the Reader's Digest 4CD collection titled 'Till The End Of Time – Glorious Melodies That Will Live Forever) issued in 1991. This is track 16 on CD 3.
It's played by the Romantic Strings Orchestra with the conductor not credited. Some information I have indicates it may have been Wally Stott.
