1930's
These Calypsonians were exponents of the art form or the genre known as “Extempo or ”War” and they hale from the island of Trinidad, the Land Of Calypso. Extempo is stilled practiced in Trinidad & Tobago today.
Their names reflect their lyrical prowess and ability to devastate their opponents in any verbal competition or Battle.
With out a doubt this is the equiveant of today’s Rappers in a ”Rap Battle”.The basic elements of hip-hop --boasting raps, rival posses, uptown throwdowns, and political commentary -- were all present in Trinidadan music by 1900.
Listen to the manner in which these Calypsonians deliver their poetry, the way they flow, their rhythm, rhyme, timing and the manner in which they insult their opponent. Diss one another-:)
In this War Calypso "Hodini" is the object of scorn, a Calypsonian who lived in New York at the time and one who insulted Trinidad Calypsonians with impunity from his safe and distant refuge in the USA.
One can perhaps say that these were original Rappers !!!
This “Extempo War” took place during the mid 1930’s.
