▪ Drug resistant TB or Tuberculosis also known as tuberculous infection is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects your lungs, and usually caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Drug resistant tb is one of the most concerning problem in now a days health issues around the world.
▪ Epidemiology of Tuberculosis:
A total of 1.4 million people died from TB. Worldwide, TB is one of the top 10 causes of death and the leading cause from a single infectious agent (above HIV/AIDS). In 2019, an estimated 10 million people fell ill with tuberculosis(TB) worldwide. 5.6 million men, 3.2 million women and 1.2 million children. TB is present in all countries and age groups.
▪ Types of Tuberculosis:
1- Active TB
2- Latent TB
3- Miliary TB
▪ Cause of Tuberculosis:
The Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium causes TB. It is spread through the air when a person with TB (whose lungs are affected) coughs, sneezes, spits, laughs, or talks.
▪ Diagnosis of Tuberculosis:
1-Tuberculin Skin Test
2-Chest X-rays
3-Blood Test
4-Sputum Culture Test
▪ Treatment and Medication:
If you have active form of the disease, you’ll need to take a number of antibiotics for 6 to 9 months. Four medications are most commonly used to treat it:
Ethambutol
Isoniazid
Pyrazinamide
Rifampin
The treatment of latent TB is considered by many people to be an important part of TB prevention. Generally, treatment of miliary tuberculosis is similar to the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Antibiotics are given usually given for 6 to 9 months, unless the meninges are affected.
▪ Completing treatment is essential
After a few weeks, you won't be contagious and you may start to feel better. It might be tempting to stop taking your TB drugs. But it is crucial that you finish the full course of therapy and take the medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Stopping treatment too soon or skipping doses can allow the bacteria that are still alive to become resistant to those drugs, leading to TB that is much more dangerous and difficult to treat.
To help people stick with their treatment, a program called directly observed therapy (DOT) is recommended.
