VLC is one of the most famous video player out there. VLC is not only famous on Linux and BSD based operating systems, it is also famous alternative to Windows Media Player or Movies & TV app on Microsoft Windows as well.
On the other hand, Daum PotPlayer, even though free but not open source, is another great alternative to what you get on Microsoft Windows.
So, which one to chose? Well, it all comes down to user's preference. But it seems like Daum PotPlayer is far better alternative than VLC. It not only takes less resources all together, it also enhances the audio and video experience of the user.
You disagree? Just watch the video and you will realize it yourself. As for testing enhanced audio, you have to install PotPlayer yourself.
Some may say VLC works better on Linux. Well, they are wrong again. I made a video comparing VLC with MPV on Deepin Linux. We still don't have stable release of MPV and it already outperforms VLC on resource usage test. Also video experience was better on MPV. Watch that video here:

This video is not to defame VLC. It is just to show how overrated open source projects can sometimes be.
