Initially I used the wrong name, "digital micrometers". These are digital calipers, and the Pittsburgh brand can be found on sale at Harbor Freight for about $10. The Mitutoyo is currently selling for $115 on Amazon.
Edit almost four years later: I still own these calipers, although the thumb wheel has fallen off and it randomly adds 0.200 every once in a while. They're still used for doing the dirty work I don't want to subject the Mitutoyo to. And it's till on the original battery.
