It is undeniable that the Grand Canyon is a spectacular place. But it also has a complicated history and a rich legacy particularly for the Native people who call it home. When the park first opened much of the tribal history was erased from public view. Now in conjunction with 11 federally recognized tribes, the Grand Canyon Conservancy has worked to share the true history of the park. On this episode Kelkiyana Yazzie, a 4th generation Navajo Park Ranger, and Mindy Riesenberg from the Conservancy talk with Michaela about what it took to correct history and the changes you will see on your next visit to this natural wonder.
The 11 tribes that have historic connections to the lands and resources now found within Grand Canyon National Park are:
Havasupai Tribe – AZ
Hopi Tribe – AZ
Hualapai Tribe – AZ
Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians – AZ
Las Vegas Paiute Tribe – NV
Moapa Band of Paiute Indians – NV
