For the first time on A Tale of Two Tones, the two tones of two guitar players... James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica!
Being the pioneers of thrash metal we felt we had to cover both guitar players from Metallica, from their humble beginnings of the early 80s Metallica's tone and sound has changed a lot over a career going into their 5th decade. We decided to focus mainly on their tone from around '84/'85 and the more modern Death Magnetic/ World Magnetic tour eras.
As always with A Tale of Two Tones, we didn't go for specific tones and gear but we wanted to capture the vibe of the tone. So to do that we used a Gibson 70s Flying V and Charvel So-Cal through a Marshall JVM for the 80s tones and both James' and Kirk's LTD signature guitars through a Mesa Boogie Triple Crown for their more modern tones.
Hope you enjoy our approximation of the Two Tones of Metallica! Let us know in the comments below what you think.
We'd also love to hear who you would like to hear next in our series of A Tale of Two Tones! (And if you liked us tackling the tones of a band!)
