Synopsis:
The first woman who made history in Western civilisation, who believed she had a divine mission and saved France during the dark days of the Hundred Years War, was a girl from a simple background who defied all the institutions of the day. Her victories enabled the dauphin to be crowned Charles VII of France in the cathedral at Reims, but in the end she was charged with heresy and burned at the stake... still just 19 years of age.
The passion of Joan of Arc resonates down through the centuries; in France she is revered as a national heroine. The odds were against her: she was the wrong age, the wrong gender, and she came from the wrong background. But the "inner voices", those of the Archangel Michael, St Catherine and St Margaret, instructed her to liberate France from the English.
In 1425 France was in a terrible situation: the English had occupied the north-west of the country, and in Paris the English and the Burgundians ruled together. The country was ravaged by a bitter civil war. And the heir to the throne, Charles, could not be crowned king in Reims, because the city was in the hands of his enemies.
16-year-old Joan set off to drive the enemy out of the country, claiming to fulfil the prophecy of the magician Merlin that "a maid from the forest would appear to rescue France". Convinced that God was on her side, possessed with incredible obstinacy, she managed to appear in front of the dauphin, Charles. A weak and indecisive man, he was deeply impressed by her absolute confidence that God had ordered her to fulfil this mission. Charles sent her to Orléans with a troop of soldiers, where she would attempt to liberate the city from the English.
Orléans had been occupied for six months, and the inhabitants were desperate. Despite being wounded in the shoulder, Joan of Arc defeated the English, and the fame of the Virgin of Orléans quickly spread throughout the kingdom. Without any official right of command, she had inspired her men to victory by virtue of her faith and confidence. It was the turning point after the defeats and humiliations of the Hundred Years War. In further victories she managed to bring more cities and castles back under the control of the French, and finally, on 17 July 1429, Charles was crowned king in Reims cathedral: it was Joan of Arc‘s happiest hour.
But her joy was short-lived. An attempt to liberate Paris failed, her influence on the King declined, and in 1430 she was put on trial, charged with witchcraft and wearing men's clothes – at the time regarding as sacrilegious. On 30 May 1431 Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Even the English soldiers, her mortal enemies, had tears in their eyes as they watched. In 1456 the King officially pardoned Joan of Arc, and in 1920 she was recognised as a saint.
