Glutamate is an emotional amplifier, and in some cases can explain mood swings, being overly emotional, or taking everything personally.
Glutamate can be converted into GABA, and GABA can be converted back into glutamate, so rarely will they both be high at the same time, but if glutamate becomes elevated, it can become problematic - and there's 2 ways this can happen:
1) consuming things that contain glutamate, or its precursor L-glutamic acid
2) if there's a decreased conversion of glutamate into GABA
To restore balance, which reduces anxiety and makes you feel better, you can:
1) take GABA - but that won't solve the root of the problem if the root of the problem is a decreased conversion of glutamate into GABA
2) go keto - since ketones increase the action of the GAD (glutamic acid decarboxylase) enzyme, which increases the conversion of glutamate into GABA
3) go low carb - to reduce the risk of hyperglycemia (which increases glutamate production in the brain), and as long as you produce less glutamate, eventually your levels will go down
4) fast - since fasting increases ketones
