A message from Phil Griffin, Chair, Board of Directors, St. Joseph's Health Care London and Dr. Gillian Kernaghan, President & CEO.
I am joined by Board Chair Phil Griffin to invite you to view St. Joseph’s 2015-2016 Annual Report to the Community. Once again, our annual report to you is exclusively through our St. Joseph’s Website.
We hope you will read stories of our patients and residents in this report and be inspired by their incredible journeys of care and recovery at St. Joseph’s. Also and equally important, we seek your questions and feedback.
The life and work of St. Joseph’s this past year has, as always, been fast-paced and focused. We have made good strides in our new strategic plan to ensure patients and families are partners in their care, in our relentless pursuit of safety, and to optimize transitions through care.
Our strategic focus on recovery and rehabilitation, integrated complex chronic disease management and innovations in ambulatory surgery are also showing strong results, which you can read about in this report.
For example, learn how our cardiac rehabilitation and diabetes programs are, together, wrapping services around patients recognizing that people come to us with multiple complex continuing needs. We are breaking down disease-specific silos to serve patients in new ways that improves access to care, outcomes and quality of life.
Read too about promising research aimed at inducing remission of type two diabetes, a world first in imaging technology, a Canadian first in spinal cord injury rehabilitation, how music is igniting memories for our long term care residents, and much more.

Today’s hospitals require responsive, informed governance, recognizing that decisions made today will have impacts years from now. Volunteer board governance, representing our community, is a trust we carry from our founders. This includes our commitment to openness, to service and to mission.
Over the past year St. Joseph’s continued focus on quality and performance have resulted in important achievements in numerous areas, such as medication safety, hand hygiene, the reduction of falls with injury, and significantly shorter wait times in key areas such as diagnostic imaging, breast care, urology and pain management services.
We have also substantially increased our staff and physician engagement scores, which tell us just how staff and physicians feel about working at St. Joseph’s. In our bi-annual Employee and Physician Experience surveys, the organization scored higher than all other comparator organizations. For example, 80.2 per cent of staff said they are proud to tell others they are part of St. Joseph’s.
This pride and our focus on excellence were clear to Accreditation Canada surveyors, who, in October, accredited St. Joseph’s with Exemplary Standing. A most outstanding achievement. The surveyors remarked that our culture is evident across all our sites in how we deliver care.

At the heart of all we do is our vision to earn your complete confidence in the care we provide and make a lasting difference in the quest to live fully.
We know this vision means many things to the many people. But quite simply, confidence in care starts and ends with those we serve.
It also means ensuring that staff and physicians have the environments and supports to flourish; that more than 2,000 residents, clinical fellows, medical students and other health discipline students are well-prepared for their future careers; and that our researchers are supported in their quest for new knowledge.
To everyone – patients and residents, families, partners, volunteers, students, researchers, donors, suppliers and funders - your confidence is vital to all we do.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about St. Joseph’s. We welcome your feedback about your care experience with us and how we can serve you better.
