Rehab after joint replacement: how long should be spent? Outpatient joints patients are able to do more at home than we ever thought they could. Most patients would say that when they do go home, their whole perception changes about the process. There is a population of patients that will have to go to a rehab facility. This doesn’t have to do with obesity and necessarily diabetes, but tends to be patients with multiple medical comorbidities that require a multidisciplinary management approach. Patients with significant heart disease, kidney issues, a history of infection etc., may require advanced medications through an IV.
The other factor that determines who will go to recovery in a rehab is social support. Patients who don’t have the support at home or live in a situation where they can’t manage their care will go to a rehab. Those are the patients that benefit from rehab. About 10% of patients go to a rehab for a short period of time.
