Our tip #4 of healthy food swaps is about meat. Grass-fed beef and plant-based meat are two different types of protein sources with distinct nutritional profiles and environmental impacts.
Grass-fed beef comes from cows that have been raised on a diet of grass and other forage, rather than grain. This type of grazing is excellent for carbon capturing and a healthy environment.
GF beef is generally considered to be healthier than grain-fed beef because it contains more beneficial nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.
Plant-based meat, on the other hand, is made from plant-based ingredients such as GMO soy, peas, other legumes or wheat that destroy your gut and are anti-nutrients. These products are designed to look and taste like meat and are falsely promoted as the better option. Plant-based meat is generally highly processed, higher in carbs, contains synthetic vitamins, and is not good for the environment because of monocrops and the use of pesticides.
Grass-fed beef is a good source of protein, all 9 essential amino acids, B vitamins, iron, and other nutrients that are important for athletes and people who need high-quality protein in their diets. Plant-based meats are a source of poor quality barely absorbable protein and they do not contain the same amount or variety of nutrients.
Grass-fed beef can provide several benefits for athletes, including:
Higher Nutrient Content: Grass-fed beef contains higher amounts of nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which can help with recovery and reduce inflammation.
Lower Fat Content: Grass-fed beef has a lower fat content compared to grain-fed beef, which can make it easier to maintain a healthy weight.
More Protein: Beef is a good source of protein, which is essential for muscle growth and recovery. Grass-fed beef can provide even more protein than grain-fed beef.
Improved Digestion: Grass-fed beef is also easier to digest than grain-fed beef, which can help with nutrient absorption and reduce bloating and indigestion.
If you can't afford GF beef, Grain-fed is still better than no meat or plant based.
A healthy amount of animal protein for humans is 1 gram per pound of body weight and a little more for athletes.
