U.S. President Joe Biden visited Poland on Tuesday, reaffirming his commitment to Ukraine and contending Moscow would “never” win as the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion approaches.
His remarks come a day after he made a surprise visit to Ukraine’s capital Kyiv. Biden met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and announced a new military aid package worth about $500 million.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered state-of-the-nation address after his visit. He justified his invasion of his neighbour by accusing Western countries of threatening Russia.
"It's they who have started the war. And we are using force to end it," Putin said before an audience of lawmakers, state officials and soldiers who have fought in Ukraine. He also gave an indirect threat by saying said that calls in the West for the 'strategic defeat of Russia' means they want to turn a local conflict into a global conflict.
