Women's Dance is another piece transcribed for piano from the opera Aleko by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), after Intermezzo, which I have already recorded. The dance is actually a waltz in three-eights time Rachmaninoff not only gives Tempo di valse as the tempo marking. As is typical for a waltz, there are also several three-fourths measures in the melody part, each over two three-eighths measures, so-called hemiolas.
This opera was Rachmaninoff's final compositional work at the Moscow Conservatory with which the then only 19-year-old greatly impressed the jury and for which he was awarded the Grand Gold Medal for the first time in the Conservatory's history. For more information, see the Intermezzo recording:
