In this video you will learn how to do a plank properly and how to do a plank safely, by chiropractor Bloor West Village Dr. Byron Mackay. The plank exercise is one of the best core exercises, and one of the best low back exercises for core stability.
It is important to learn how to do a plank exercise correctly, specifically to learn how to plank without hurting your back. This intermediate plank exercise is appropriate for almost anyone, even as a back pain exercise, but please follow the plank exercise demonstration video closely.
For how to do a safe plank exercise, start with your elbows directly under your shoulders, at roughly 90 degrees, to minimize stress on your shoulders and elbows. Generally planks on the elbows, instead of planks on straight arms, will be less likely to cause injury.
Then for how to do a plank on toes, elevate your body, trying to keep a straight line from your feet or toes into your knees, hips, torso and neck. This intermediate plank requires core activation and core contraction throughout, while squeezing your glutes to stabilize your core.
Learning how to plank properly and to plank safely should not cause pain. To do a safe plank exercise, once you’ve held the intermediate plank exercise for 10-45 seconds, whatever you are comfortable with, lower down onto your side, without collapsing, and rest for 5-10 seconds, as shown in the intermediate plank demonstration video. Pay attention to proper form and technique for the plank exercise.
