Currently being given the repetitive treatment in a Boots Opticians TV commercial is the Italian song "Guarda Che Luna" ["Look at that Moon"] as recorded by Fred Buscaglione. Written by Gualtiero Malgoni, Fred's 1959 single became a huge hit. Tragically, he was killed in a car crash the very next year.
While I do greatly like Fred's original version, I am nevertheless drawn to that by Italian diva, Milva, recorded three years later. Milva has, to my mind, set the bar for any aspiring Italian song stylist. Few recording artists have as eclectic a catalogue as "La Rossa" — so named on account of her trademark red hair — which ranges from pure pop to Brecht, and embraces collaborations with Ennio Morricone, Francis Lai, Mikis Theodorakis, Enzo Jannacci and Vangelis. Fewer still can claim to have performed at venues like La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, London's Royal Albert Hall, the Edinburgh Festival and others.
Milva's own PR describes her as "one of the greatest female performers on the international scene ever". A bold statement with which I agree entirely!
