In US news and current events today, these parents lost their daughter after she mistook a kidnapper’s car for her Uber driver. Now they’re pushing for federal laws to protect rideshare passengers. In March 2019, Samantha Josephson left a party in South Carolina. She hopped in a car she thought was her Uber.
About a year after the University of South Carolina student’s death, her family is opening up about their heartbreak and working to stop the possibility of another tragedy.
In honor of Samantha, the Josephson family created the What’s My Name Foundation to promote education on rideshare safety.
In 2019, New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith (R) pushed to pass Sami’s Law HR 4686. The bill passed in May 2019, requiring rideshare companies to have identifying markers on the front and back of cars, a QR code for passengers to scan, and two forms of credentials displaying a driver’s name & photo.
A federal bill the Josephsons have supported is currently in the House
pending a vote on the floor. In an effort to strengthen their mission, and spread further awareness, the Josephson family created the SAMI.
