Why did Darth Vader let Admiral Piett live at the end of The Empire Strikes Back? Piett wasn’t originally meant to appear in Return of the Jedi, but according to actor Kenneth Colley, fan mail supporting his return convinced George Lucas to bring him back. I imagine Piett likely was going to be presumed dead and killed off screen in between episodes five and six, but since he was brought back for Return of the Jedi, why did Vader spare him? The Darth Vader comics by Greg Pock basically show the immediate aftermath of The Empire Strikes Back, and the Sith Lord seems to be completely preoccupied with thoughts of his past, which came back to the surface after revealing his identity to Luke. He directed his rage at the Emperor, Obi-Wan, the Lars family, and everyone else who kept his son’s existence a secret, leaving immediately on a new mission. Piett was just an insignificant footnote for Vader on that day. Lucky for him!
