In 1997, National Ballet of Canada principal dancer Karen Karen received the National Arts Centre Award during the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards ceremony in Ottawa. Singer Buffy Sainte-Marie introduced ballerina Veronica Tennant who provided a very personal introduction to a short film about Kain, her friend and colleague. (Unfortunately, the end of the tribute video is cut off, but almost all of it is intact.) Kain would receive the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement five years later in 2002.
