To be corrected, I used charcoal in the experiment!
Diamonds and coal are both, at their base, different forms of the element carbon.
High-pressure and high-temperature are keys to turning pure carbon into diamonds.
And coal has a lot of impurities which prevent coal from being turned into diamonds.
