On January 14, 2023 Vermont Wolf Patrol saw a vehicle with hounds pull off of state highway 22A north of Addison, Vermont and soon after, put three dogs on the ground. We were in the area investigating possible violations of Vermont's Act No. 159, which includes a moratorium on the hunting of coyotes with dogs (with exceptions) until the Fish & Wildlife Board establishes rules for the practice.
When this hound hunter saw us at a distance filming, he exited his vehicle and collected his dogs and then quickly drove away. Last winter, just south of Addison outside Shoreham, Vermont Wolf Patrol documented other hound hunters in pursuit of coyote. Vermont's moratorium on coyote hunting with dogs includes exceptions such as allowing landowners to use the practice in defense of property, or anyone with written permission from a landowner acting in defense of property.
We don't know whether this individual was in pursuit of coyotes, though we were in the area because it is a popular area for hunting coyotes with dogs. One things for sure, this hound hunter did not want to be filmed.
