Curtis Crylen, MD is a urologist with Banner Health, and would like to spend a few minutes talking with you about a new treatment our urology team is excited to offer for men with an enlarged prostate and difficulty with urination.
Prostate Aquablation is a revolutionary new treatment for enlarged prostate or BPH. The Aquabeam system uses a robotically controlled, image-guided, high pressure water jet ablation to remove prostate tissue, quickly, precisely, and without high temperature. Treatment is contoured and monitored in real time to preserve all critical structures for sexual function and urinary control including the bladder neck, ejaculatory ducts, and urinary sphincter. This decreases the side effect profile compared to Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) or other high-temperature ablation procedures such as greenlight laser vaporization or Rezum steam treatment. Additionally, Aquablation allows us to treat very large prostates, larger than can be safely treated with these other procedures, due to the speed and power of the water jet, while still remaining minimally invasive. Prostates up to 150 gm (or six times the normal size - the size of a small orange) and even larger can be successfully treated with Aquabeam. There are no incisions and treatment can typically be completed in 30-45 minutes. We have had great success treating patients with the Aquablation procedure and believe this may become the new standard for BPH treatment moving forward. We are currently the only practice in Northern Colorado to offer this exciting new treatment.
Current regulations do restrict this treatment to men under 80 years of age, and patients must also be off blood thinners or safely able to hold anticoagulation for a few weeks to be good candidates for the procedure.
If Aquablation is not the right treatment for a particular patient, we still have many other options including other minimally invasive procedures available for treatment of BPH. At Banner, we strive to work with patients to understand their individual clinical situation and goals and then help them choose the best treatment to accomplish those goals. We look forward to partnering with you and helping you or your patients with all their urologic care.
