And yes for the most part what you call youtube would just be Sega Saturn cut scenes for neckbeards.
I forgot to mention LAN parties as well. Whilst most wouldn't be "communicating" (getting banned) on vast networks, in the smaller sense LAN servers would run ten times better among a house full of people. Though I think portable gaming like the Gameboy would've taken off and become the Steam equivalent of video game monopoly as Nintendo once was.
