The car has now been fitted with a replacement started motor and now starts perfectly as soon as the key is turned every time.
During the last lockdown I drove home and parked the car. It was fine. The next day I went to use it and it wouldn't start. I think it turned over but just didn't fire. We couldn't jump start it so we pushed it into our parking space and it's been sat there for a few months. I think it was saying ECO mode at the time.
I need to get it sorted now so I have bought a new battery and fitted it. I also connected jump leads to another car incase the battery wasn't fully charged. Of course it started first time. It ran for a few seconds and then cut out. I started it again and it ran for a few seconds and cut out again. I guess as it had old diesel in it. The next time it started and ran at about 500 rpm for about 30 seconds and then it cut out. The next time it started I pumped the throttle and kept high revs and after some initial smoke it ran fine. I let it run for about twenty minutes while I checked out the rest of it like bulbs and tyres. Once I was happy I reversed it back in to it's space and turned everything off. Just before I left it I tried it one further time and despite all the electrics appearing to work and all the normal dash lights coming on as normal, no error messages or eco mode just the normal clock, but when I turned the key to the start position, all I got was a single click sound coming from in front of the steering wheel. It sounded like a relay activating. I tried several times and this is all it now does. I also locked and unlocked the car and still no change. I only have one key for it and that is a normal no-alarm fob key.
I have checked the brand new battery and after charging, my charger says that it fully charged at about 13v. I have tried it again and the same issue, central locking works, dash lights all work but just a click and no starting. The battery cable contacts look ok to me and don't seem to have any corrosion on them.
